U.S. official denies Rubin resignation rumor

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) - A U.S. government official on Wednesday denied a financial market rumor that Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin had resigned.

''It's not true,'' said the official, who spoke on condition that he not be identified by name.

Rumors circulated through financial markets, both in the United States and Europe, that Rubin had resigned, possibly over his objection to a bill to overhaul the financial services industry.

Treasuries had lost some of their overnight gains in trading in London, possibly because of the rumors.

White House spokesman Barry Toiv said, ''Everybody will clearly see the secretary hard at work today.''

''It seems like once a week there's a market rumor started by someone for whatever reason that Rubin has resigned. Whether there is a motive for this we don't know, but we're not going to respond every time someone starts a market rumor, whatever their motive might be,'' he said.
