MPullee,
Obviously I'm not Kunkel or Duffy, but your post didn't sound right to me and so I clipped out the meaningful data from that review you quoted. It's listed at the bottom of this post, but the data indicated a low (best) for Compuserve at 2.640 seconds and the high (worst)for GetNet at 28.043, with the average appearing to be around 4/5. PSInet performed at 5.875, better than Netcom, by the way. I don't have the time to figure out the average, but where do you get the data to support PSInet as being "at the bottom of the barrel"? It's not from this article, so please let us know where you found it!

Regards,
Dave

Dear MPullee (and others who have posted on this question)

We have discussed with Boardwatch their methodology in doing these tests. Our information is that they used 36 test machines in 27 cities. None of their machines was connected directly to PSINet; 18 were connected through MCI, 13 through UUNet, and 5 through Sprint.

As a result, we would expect those connected directly to post superior results. We would also expect the results for PSINet to be less favorable than if we had been directly connected.

In fact, our engineers are favorably surprised that our results were as favorable as they were (certainly not "bottom of the barrel", but neither as good as we know our network to be), given the poor connectivity we see through some of the providers hosting the test servers.

We have asked that the playing field be levelled in these tests, but have yet to see it be.

Hope this helps.

David Kunkel
