>>What do PCs resemble most<< Interesting question in divining the longer range megatrends. I really think the analogies of TV vs car or 'other thing' analogies divert our attention from the many functions being redefined by the box o'chips. Computers are replacing my old PC as well as my sliderule, typewriter, postcards, encyclopedia books, price tags on soup cans, car engine tuneups, newspaper and a gazillion other things we though we could not get along without. I don't care so much what it looks like as I do how much it can improve my life. My favorite computer is an HP200LX, a complete PC in the palm of my hand. It is my faithful companion remembering millions of important details for me. Not long ago a PC was a number cruncher, then it became a word processor and publisher. Now the internet is redefining what the PC must do to satisfy out new needs to be connected. The speed of change is accelerating at a mind boggling rate. Tomorrows PC will be out of sight and distributed through the the things I use. It will anticipate my need to be cool at night and drenched with warm sun in the morning. It will take dictation in my car. It will dim the lights when I settle down to enjoy a new sci-fi movie it found on the satellite. It will pay the bills, reorder the groceries, reset the clocks. That is just the small stuff, because I won't recognize the big shifts until they are happening. Some things I will keep an eye out for are the enabling technologies for displays (LCD?), solid state non-volatile storage vs. information warehouses in cyber space, sites which can make the net more productive, chip technologies (DSP), higher bandwidth connections (ADSL, cable modems?) and of course new business shifts made possible by all those PCs. Maybe I should be looking for companies with connected, fleet of mind management. Where do you want to go today? Microsoft will take us there....willing or not. The only question is whether I can get a window seat. I just hope I am not looking out the rear window. The Pilot will have a good view. Captain Bill is buying up the electronic distribution rights for artwork and stuff. So is Bell & Howell (tilt)
