Mr. Gilder - While I realize that you have a busy schedule, I have a couple of questions about Java that I would like your comments on. I'll just throw out a few questions and areas that you can comment on. 1) How and why do you see Java becoming the platform / tool of choice in the next 5 yrs? 2) To what extent is this going to happen? Are we going to see a steaming cup of coffee when we turn on our computers (instead of the cloud filled Windows 95 startup) or is Java going to be the pervasive tool for small footprint devices like a unified communication PDA? 3) Are the benefits from Java 10x better, cheaper, faster, etc than the existing technologies or future technologies? 4) I have a difficult time envisioning an environment where current installed bases of technology (Computing power and information located at the PC) is taken over by a NC and centralized processing and storage. Even when bandwidth is limitless, why would people want to give up control of their information and computing ability? See Wired Magazines 6.02 article of "Thin Client? Fat Chance" wired.com 5) If Java is to succeed like you propose, what steps are needed for it to get there? I appreciate you being able to offer any comments on some or all of these topics. George, Question for u.. have you vevr heard of a company called Precision Optics (POCI) in Mass. The have unveiled a broad filter for the WDM and are expected to announce a narrow filter for the WDM any day. In addition they have recently added Rod Moore, a senior production guy from Corning and Dr Anguss Mcleud...Do these names mean anything to you? How big is the markey for WDM filters? As far as bandwith restraints are concerned, what cos are poised to take advantage of this demand?
