NEW YORK, March 18 (Reuters) - Teligent Inc.
Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Mandl said the company has
held preliminary talks for various international opportunities
that could emerge next year.
"We clearly expect over time...that there will be many
countries around the world where we can have an impact," Mandl
told investors and analysts at Merrill Lynch's Seventh Annual
Telecommunications CEO Conference in New York.
Teligent plans to offer local and long distance telephone
service, as well as data and Internet services, to small and
medium-sized businesses using advanced digital wireless
technology. Instead of using traditional copper wires or fiber
optic cables, Teligent's wireless network will use digital
radio signals.
The company expects to enter 10 U.S. markets this year and
an additional 20 markets next year.
"As we demonstrate this type of capability in this part of
the world, others around the world will see it as attractive,"
said Mandl, former AT&T Corp president.
Teligent could pursue partnerships in developed countries
where increased competition in telecommunications markets force
companies to explore new systems. In developing countries,
where there is limited telecommunications infrastructure in
place, Teligent's fixed wireless system could be used to
establish networks, he said.
India, Brazil and Mexico are potentially attractive
markets for Teligent, Mandl said.
