Just got back from the University of Washington computer fair (http://www.washington.edu/compfair). This local fair attracts a surprising number of locals and has a large number of exhibitors. No sign of Metricom anywhere. :-( Several other wireless solutions were being demoed - pretty expensive though. The huge irony is that the fair is being held right next to the Paul Allen library! Sigh...

A couple points of fact:
1- The $5 million for seattle included everything, that was total cost.
2- No, you don't need 4 modems per square mile. You need less. For many areas (ie: most of the greater seattle area) the average is less than a modem per a square mile. For dense areas, it is more than a modem a square mile.
3- Seattle went from "announced" to "online" in about 14 months.
