Hi Paul, Article...3Com and Intel Introduce Versatile Server NICs...

March 18, 1998

PC Week: Server-side networking received a boost last week as 3Com Corp. and Intel Corp. each introduced new families of NICs. Both vendors are also shipping new network adapters for servers.

3Com's Fast EtherLink Server NIC 3C980-TX includes Dynamic Access Fast IP software, which lets one physical NIC appear as multiple logical NICs, giving multiple VLAN (virtual LAN) support for up to 16 VLANs, said officials of the Santa Clara, Calif., firm.

3Com's Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC 3C985-SX is a full-duplex Gigabit NIC designed to abate server choke points when connected to a Gigabit backbone. 3Com's Token Ring-in-Fast Ethernet Server NIC delivers a full-duplex Fast Ethernet connection for Token Ring clients. The card works with 3Com's SuperStack II Switch 2000 TR.

Meanwhile, Intel PRO/100+ Server Adapter is a Fast Ethernet NIC that includes PCI Hot Plug capabilities, allowing an administrator to replace an adapter with a NIC designed to abate server choke points when connected to a Gigabit backbone.

For larger-scale networks, Intel unveiled the EtherExpress PRO/100 Intelligent Server Adapter, a 10/100 NIC, which has all the functions of the Pro 100+ but also supports up to 64 VLANs.

3Com's NICs are available now. The Fast Etherlink Server NIC costs $199 for a single, $975 for a five-pack and $3,800 for a 20-pack. The Gigabit NIC is $1,695 for a single and $8,050 for a pack of five. The Token Ring-in-Fast Ethernet NIC costs $249 for a single.

Intel's EtherExpress PRO/100 Intelligent Server Adapter is available now and costs $399. The EtherExpress PRO/100+ Server Adapter is due in April for $119.

Paul, Re: "Current Slot 1 Pentium IIs all have 512 KByte L2 caches."

Thanks, Paul. That's what I thought, but the Intel page I URL'd didn't mention it (or I was in too much of a hurry to see it).

Re: "If your memory is pretty good, harken back to the "Pentium" jokes of 1993 - A Pentium! What
the H*LL is that! It don't even got no number!"

Yes, "Pentium, pantium, plenium, plenum, or whatever they call it, do they really think it's going to sell?"
