Off of Yahoo: Netscape goes full steam into e-commerce SINGAPORE, March 18 (Reuters) - Internet software pioneer Netscape Communications Corp entered a partnership with Singapore's SilkRoute Ventures on Wednesday, aiming to be Asia's top business software solutions provider, company officals said. Netscape said SilkRoute, an internet services group involved in projects with Japan's Matsushita and Singapore government institutions, would help it provide software solutions linking manufacturers with their customers via the computer in Asia. Netscape, which had given away its Navigator and Communicator browser products to consumers in January, will focus its investments in electronic commerce, notably, in providing internet-based solutions to firms and linking them with customers. This business-to-business market of electronic commerce will be Netscape's growth engine, officials said. ''We see big money and growth in the business-to-business market, which will power Netscape's growth. We are poised for good growth this year in this market,'' Ramesh Nava, Netscape's managing director for Asia South, told a news conference. The business-to-business market, valued at US$8 billion last year, is expected to grow to more than US$100 billion by year 2000. Under the agreement, SilkRoute will provide solutions based on Netscape's ECXpert and PublishingXpert, core components of the CommerceXpert product line, an electronic commerce application. Singapore, Malaysia, India and Thailand are the main countries targeted for expansion. Nava was optimistic Asia's financial crunch would neither dent the group's growth potential nor industry potential. ''In fact, this is a time where corporates will look at ways to maximise what they have and do with less,'' he said.
