Finding the optimal time to invest into a biotech is extremely difficult. I don't yet have figured that out. I considered Ligand an excellent long term investment candidate when it was below $12 from december to february. After all we had the same $20 to $30 medium term price targets that we still have now. And the only difference is that now Ligand is more likely to actually reach those targets. And that we know that Ligand has actually started its expected earnings growth by reducing its losses. This earnings surprise was the trigger for the current rally. At current prices I consider Ligand just one of several promising biotechs. But I don't see a really good reason to sell any shares.

If I waited until Ligand reaches $20 - $30 I could only afford half as much shares which would seriously reduce the long term potential of this investment. And I would have the risk that maybe the only difference would be that I paid full price for the company instead of acquiring it at a discount.
