Nextel has bought a 21 percent stake of a Japanese company with a nationwide 12 MHz license for $32 million. This means that the company's entire worth is about $160 million (5 times $32 million). The Japanese company has only 40,000 subscribers.

Nextel Buys Stake In Japanese Provider

MCLEAN, Va. (Reuters) - Wireless communications provider Nextel Communications said its Nextel International wholly owned international subsidiary has purchased a 21 percent stake in a Japanese wireless operator for about $32 million in equity and shareholder loans.

Nextel said the Japanese wireless operator provides digital specialized mobile radio services to about 40,000 subscriber units in the 1.5 GHz frequency band.

A Nextel spokesman said the name of the Japanese company would not be released.

The operator expects to begin offering integrated services, including mobile telephone service, in Tokyo later this year, Nextel said.

The Japanese operator's nationwide 12 MHz license to provide interconnect and digital dispatch capabilities covers areas of Japan where about 125 million people live or work, Nextel said.
