BS,

Re: "The sub $1000 computer has adequate speed, hard drive, RAM for most people. Isn't this bearish for chipmakers and the equipment providers?"

IMO, it's not good for the chip makers and amounts to shrinking margins and revenues and what isn't good for the chip makers applies to the semi-equips, as well. We have discussed this in this thread, but it's been awhile.

Re: "When internet speed is improved, will there be need for more powerful hardware?"

Yes, I would think so. One question is how long will we continue to not address the bandwidth problem on a widespread basis.

Re: "My Dell 233 runs faster than I need."

Good point and one that we have made before here. My family has 3 PCs, 166 and up, and we really don't need anymore right now ;-).

Re: "This may be holding back semi stocks."

That and profit warnings or reduced expectations from ROK, MU, INTC, VLSI, CFMT, BRKS, NSM, BAY... you get the picture.

Re: "News."

Yes, I try to post news that could affect the semis, semi-equips, and tech stocks in general. All of these seem to be so world-wide that what is happening in Japan, Korea, etc. matters to us who try to follow this industry closely (at times anyway).

This message may not make a bit of sense as I am writing it "on the run". I'm late again, what's new?!

Teri

BS - There have been several conversations in the past about the future drivers of technology. Some of the various threads can be traced by from these posts - (they're both mine, but that is only because it is easier to search my own posts):
