Dear Jane,
What people don't know is that Hebrew has been spoken in the Jewish Synagogues throughout the ages up to now. My sons are studying it for their upcoming Bar Mitzvah, so it is not unusual for us to use the Hebrew names given at their Brit as babies. The scriptures say Jesus had a Brit (circumcision) and would be given a Hebrew name no matter what the language around Him might have been, and He would have been trained in Hebrew for the Scriptures were in Hebrew. There is a beautiful account of the Septuagant in Josephus but why would the Jews need it if they had the original? Like Alan said we have no problem with the name Jesus they have a problem with the name Yeshua. and He will be called by other names Mighty God, wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, etc... The name Yesus does not exist and has no meaning where as Yeshua in Hebrew means Salvation and that was what He came to bring to the world. How could I have pride in using the name Yeshua when I am put down by them everytime I mention anything about the name or Jewishness of Him? I could be more puffed up by going along with them and have them say I now know the truth and am truely saved then. People that speak a second language may use a seperate name for Him and that would not offend them but the Hebrew name does, so consider the source of irritation.
