Hey, Church Lady. Ericsson Presents New Cellular Subscriber Forecast
830 Million Subscribers by Year End 2003

Palm IIIs for everyone.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1998--Ericsson has revised its forecast for the world's cellular subscribers to include year 2003. Ericsson expects that the number of cellular subscribers will exceed 830 million by year end 2003. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 27 percent between 1998 to 2003.

At year end 1997 there were nearly 207 million cellular subscribers in total worldwide, an increase by more than 70 million during 1997 alone. Ericsson expects the total number by year end 2001 to be close to 605 million. Ericsson's previous forecast in February 1997 predicted 590 million cellular subscribers by year end 2001.

''The new forecast reinforces our earlier figures for the number of cellular subscribers by 2001, even exceeding it. We're also confident that growth will continue at a strong rate during the consecutive two years of our forecast,'' says Dr. Lars Ramqvist, President and CEO of Ericsson.

''In this fast-moving industry it means good news for end-users as well as for network operators and suppliers,'' Dr. Ramqvist continues.

By year end 1997 there were more than 112 million digital subscribers worldwide compared to close to 95 million analog. North America was the largest region by year end 1997 with 60 million cellular subscribers, followed by Western Europe with 57 million. The Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan, had 40 million and a growth rate of 67 percent compared to 1996. Japan alone had close to 29 million users (excluding PHS) and Latin America had more than 13 million users.

During 1998 Ericsson expects Western Europe to exceed North America in number of cellular subscribers. In year 2002 Ericsson expects the Asia Pacific region to exceed Western Europe.

By year end 2003 Ericsson predicts that Japan will have a penetration of cellular subscribers close to 60 percent, followed by North America with more than 50 percent and Western Europe close to 50 percent. Ericsson predicts that the worldwide penetration of cellular subscribers will still be less than 15 percent by year end 2003.

Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.

Ericsson is using the Aware/ADI chipset...and ADI just came out with the world's smallest DSP...not sure on it's possible applications.
