Who do you think will be the strong 64 bit NT player? Who will have the biggest mindshare with Microsoft and the development community? Lets see... there is currently only one 64 bit platform capable of running NT - I wonder what MS is developing on? How about Alpha? There is only one platform which developers can use to actually create, verify, and tune 64 bit NT apps prior to the launch of Merced. the answer - you're right! alpha again! So who will MS partner with most closely (hint - much of this partnership is already announced, and fairly recently). Answer - whoever controls alpha development.
Note that none of this depends on alpha being a viable environment in its own right. Alpha just happens to be the only vehicle for that development in the near term.
Now - where does that put Dell? I hope MSD has a strategy to counter this perception over the next 18 months.
