< Help me understand the strategy of shorting at the ask > In a fast moving market (downward) your chances of getting hit at the ask on a short are minimal as the ask will keep dropping and everyone will be selling at the bid. But under other market conditions you can match other MM's at the ask using an ECN. Or alternatively you can undercut the best ask yourself. Say for stock XYZ you see 25 x 25 1/8. You can go out and offer it at 25 1/16 thus becoming the best ask. Not sure if this answers your question. Dave
