Informix, SAP Continue Joint Development Efforts; Companies Announce Powerful New Data Warehouse Solution with Informix Dynamic Server at CeBIT Show

HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1998--Informix(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:IFMX), the leading provider of innovative database technology, and SAP AG, a market and technology leader in client/server enterprise application software, announced today at the CeBIT 1998 show that they are continuing joint development efforts with a release of SAP's Business Information Warehouse (BIW) for Informix Dynamic Server(tm).

The combined data warehouse solution, available later this year, will enable corporations to leverage their information resources for faster and more effective decision-making. The companies also announced SAPDBA, a jointly developed advanced database administration tool that enables faster and more flexible administration of Informix-based SAP R/3 systems resulting in a lower total cost of ownership for the customer.

Informix offers the most powerful and scalable database on the market, having recently achieved the record-breaking one terabyte TPC-D benchmark. The company's database technology extends the limits of data warehouse growth and performance offering customers the unparalleled ability to run the smallest data marts as well as the world's largest enterprise data warehouses.

Informix Dynamic Server will back SAP's new generation data warehouse solution, combining the industry's most powerful data warehouse technology with SAP's business expertise. The product is being developed jointly at SAP headquarters in Walldorf, Germany.

"This announcement marks an important expansion of our development relationship with SAP and underscores Informix's leadership position in the data warehouse market," said Tony Rodoni, general manager of the Informix Data Warehouse Business Development Unit. "Informix offers the fastest and most scalable databases from the smallest data marts to the largest enterprise warehouses, and this product will provide customers with a new option for building an end-to-end data warehouse solution that they can quickly deploy."

"Backed by Informix's server, our Business Information Warehouse will provide businesses with easy data access, flexible maintenance, and open interfaces," said Karl-Heinz Hess, executive vice president and member of the extended board, SAP AG. "We are pleased to be working with such a premier database provider to create a warehouse solution that meets the extensive information and data access needs of today's enterprise market."

SAPDBA for Informix is an SAP tool to facilitate the execution of regularly repeated activities in the database administration area. It contains several comprehensive analysis functions to enable a general overview of the database including dbspaces and tables. The utilization of this tool as a monitoring device allows administrators to easily recognize when it is necessary to carry out certain operations such as dbspace extension.

SAPDBA provides administrators with a graphical user interface for both the Windows NT and UNIX platforms while providing a common interface for integration of third-party tools. The companies anticipate that the product will be available in the 1st half of 1998.

What I'm trying to say is that network computing is much better for Informix than it is for Microsoft. The more predominant network computing becomes, the more demand there will be for products that can handle its demands. At this point, Informix can and Microsoft cannot.

As for whether Microsoft and Informix compete in the NC space, they do not because Microsoft cannot. That is precicely my point. Microsoft is trying everything it can to delay the adoption of network computing because it goes counter to Microsoft's business model by offering the world a choice in the client side and shifting attention away from its products on the server side. The sooner network computing arrives, the greater the premium for high end server products, and the less time Microsoft has to catch up with its underpowered server products. Conversely, the longer network computing takes to catch on, the more time Microsoft has to build a product that can compete with Informix on the high end for a fraction of the price. Longer term, unless a very broad market is created for high end data server products, Microsoft will dominate the mass market, and Informix, Oracle, and Sybase will be nothing more than niche players. The trend is already being seen. This should all be obvious.

Informix needs to root for network computing and lend its voice against Microsoft's anticompetive efforts to ruin Java.
