1. There is no bid/ask on NYSE or AMEX. Specialists arrange trades between buyers and sellers and take a small % as a fee. Specialists do not hold inventories of stock.
2. For NASDAQ the MarketMakers hold inventories of stock which they offer to buy at the bid or sell at the ask. The highest bid and lowest ask are what are posted on most services. The bid size and ask size are the number of shares that the MM guaranties to sell at that price. Seldom are the bid and ask the same MM. The number of MMs on the bid/ask generally tells something about whether or not the bid/ask is about to move and the availability of the stock. The spread between the bid/ask is also important here.
