t is not only about intel but rather what market demands

Albert,

In order to stay ahead of price erosion, new features are necessary. Take a look at the VCR and camcorder markets. The price has not changed much but the features are piling up. If AMD does not come close to what Intel can offers, Intel will phase out Cyrix and AMD with the 300mhz cacheless P-II. Intel can artificially lower the price of this part to keep its rivals unprofitable. It does not need a lot of volume. What AMD needs is a product with higher performance and reasonable yield to hold off Intel's attempt to corner the market. 3D is one.

Intel has successfully forced its rivals' offerings to compete with the P5MMX. Intel also wants to phase out the socket 7. In order to preserve margin, Intel removed the cache of the P-II to replace the P5MMX hoping the public thinks it is as good as the K6. With 3D, AMD can compete with the regular P-II.

As someone had pointed out earlier from one of the two AMD threads, the two K6s are manufactured under the same process technology. The difference is the slight larger die size. So the difficulty is minimum. In my opinion, it is necessary to increase more functions and transistors gradually; this is a stepping stone to the next processor.
