Tuberculosis on the rise
Posted Mar 19, 1998 10:36 PM EST

The World Health Organization has sent out a warning on the alarming spread of tuberculosis. The organization says, unless something is done to stop the epidemic, one billion people will be infected in the next 20 years and 70 million will die.

The T.B. problem is concentrated in 22 countries, mostly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.

There are effective drugs to treat TB The problem is people often don't take the medicine for the required period. As a result new strains of TB are developing, which are highly resistant to drugs.

Toronto could be ripe for a resurgence of tuberculosis, the city's medical officer of health warns.

"We have all the ingredients for the number of cases to increase rapidly if we're not vigilant in controlling the spread of TB with strong control programs," said Dr. Richard Gould, Toronto's associate medical officer of health.
