COMSAT Wins Contract for World's First Commercial ATM Via Satellite Service
Satellite Link to Carry High-Speed Internet Traffic Between Puerto Rico and South America
BETHESDA, Md., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- COMSAT World Systems announced today that the world's first commercial Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) satellite link is up and running, extending the U.S. Internet backbone to several South American countries.

The ATM satellite link, which has service quality comparable to fiber, will carry Internet traffic between Puerto Rico's Telefonica Larga Distancia (TLD) and South America.

ATM has emerged as the networking protocol of choice for Internet Service Providers, carriers and multinational corporations. ATM connections enable companies simultaneously to transmit high-speed, high-bandwidth applications over a single network. COMSAT's new proprietary equipment and service make it possible for companies to extend, efficiently and cost-effectively, their ATM networks around the globe via satellite.

''This new service has been made possible by advanced telecommunications technology and equipment developed by COMSAT,'' said John Mattingly, president of COMSAT Satellite Services. ''As more and more companies use ATM networks for their voice, data and multimedia applications, they will need satellite service to reach parts of the world currently under-served by fiber optic cable.''

The ATM satellite link supports applications at speeds up to 34 Mbps outbound from Puerto Rico to South America. Traffic inbound to Puerto Rico from South America will be supported at speeds up to 8 Mbps. TLD will access the INTELSAT satellite located at 359 degrees East using Telecomunicaciones Ultramarinas de Puerto Rico's (Ultracom) earth station facilities at Humacao in Puerto Rico.

''The demand for Internet access in South America is one more indication that the information revolution is a truly global phenomenon,'' Mattingly said. ''As Internet use continues to grow at an exponential rate around the world, COMSAT is extremely well positioned to serve Internet Service Providers in meeting their backbone needs. COMSAT is proud to be part of the move to connect the world via the Internet.''

Companies around the world are turning to geosynchronous satellites to meet their global needs for Internet access and other broadband services. With ATM via Satellite, companies can extend their Internet links, corporate Intranets, and other advanced networks to virtually anywhere on the planet with great ease and efficiency.

ATM via Satellite is compatible with all major ATM network components, and supports ATM links at information rates ranging from fractional T1 to DS-3. Industries that already benefit from the efficiencies of ATM technology include health care, publishing, banking and finance, news delivery, and film production. (Refer to COMSAT news release dated March 11, 1997, for more information.)

COMSAT World Systems is a business unit of COMSAT Corporation (NYSE: CQ - news). COMSAT Corporation, headquartered in Bethesda, Md., is a global provider of satellite services and digital networking services and technology.

You can look at announcements like the following from two directions. On one hand, compression techniques lessen the demand for transponder capacity. On the other hand, they make satellite more affordable for customers, so total use should go up. I go with the latter, of course. The same debate went on when digital TV compression came along. Instead of reducing TV transmission via satellite, demand has exploded as it became more affordable to transmit via satellite. The old analogue TV transmission sent a single channel over one transponder, while now you can push 8-10 channels through a transponder.

InfoChannel, Ltd. Doubles Throughput Over Satellite Link to Jamaica with Datamizer V From Symplex
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1998--Symplex(R) Communications Corporation (VSE:SYC.U. - news) announced today success of their Datamizer(R) V, high performance network enhancement data compressor. By increasing the throughput on InfoChannel's satellite link, the Datamizer V has provided a significant cost savings for InfoChannel. InfoChannel is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) serving corporations and individual customers in Jamaica.

''We are very pleased with the performance,'' stated Patrick Terrelonge, Executive Chairman of InfoChannel. ''The Datamizer V is saving us about 35 to 40 percent compared to paying for a 512 Kbps satellite link. The units will pay for themselves in about six months.''

InfoChannel installed the Datamizer V between their router and their DSU which connects to the 256 Kbps satellite link. The same configuration exists at the other end of the link in Miami. InfoChannel is able to clock their router at 512 Kbps. Should InfoChannel need additional throughput in the future, they can upgrade their satellite link to a higher speed, up to T1/E1, and the Datamizer V will continue to provide the same throughput enhancement and cost savings benefits.

The Datamizer V optimizes the existing link by providing more throughput and better response time. Designed for use over leased lines, frame relay and satellite links, these data compression devices are able to cut the need for bandwidth in half. By postponing the need to lease additional bandwidth, the Datamizer saves customers a significant amount on their monthly telecom costs.

''With Datamizer technology, each customer gets the throughput of a 512 Kbps link with only 256 Kbps of bandwidth,'' said Curt Meslang, a marketing representative for Satellite Communications Systems, Inc., a provider of satellite service. ''This cuts our customer's link cost in half, a significant cost savings. Plus, it provides more efficient use of the satellite transponder, allowing us to serve more customers.''

About Datamizers

Symplex currently offers both the Datamizer V and Datamizer IV. Datamizer V is equipped with two serial ports including a host port that can accept a clocking up to 8 Mbps and a trunk port for leased line, frame relay or satellite link at up to T1/E1 speeds. Datamizer V is also available with 2 or 4 ISDN BRI ports (optional) for Link Maintenance and additional Throughput on Demand over ISDN. Datamizer IV has six flex ports for statistical or inverse multiplexing, Throughput on Demand, and Link Maintenance.

For the record, I value Readware's posts highly, and I'm grateful to Geoff and others who relay his comments from AOL. I also believe that I as a "layman" could not undertake the independent research by myself to arrive at the wealth of factual data and informed conclusions that come from Readware's education and experience. Evaluation and judgement are important in this nascent industry, and I have to weigh the believability of reasoned arguments.

"Mason" agrees with me.

And I am loaded to the gills with G* and L* stock, with a little I* for seasoning.

May the Schwartz be with us...
