Reading the news this morning, I see an argument for diesel over gasoline in the event global warming becomes a serious issue in car design. The author is reporting on his new VW bug.

Fuel economy is not a big attraction, either. With the
base 2-liter, 115-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine, the
Beetle consumes gasoline at the rate of 22 city and
27 highway miles per gallon, about the same as a
Buick LeSabre. A year's worth of filling the
14.5-gallon tank will cost you $782.

If it's fuel economy you want, you'll have to wait for the
Turbo Direct Injection diesel-powered version that will
have an EPA rating of 48 miles per gallon on the
highway and a range of 700 miles.
