The problem with many of these inexpensive devices is that most use a capacitor, if I recall correctly, that can fail after a hit. In effect rendering the attached machines vulnerable to a second hit.

I know APC makes a good one for the phone line, costs about 60 bucks or so. Personally I have no experience with it however, as I do not have a modem.

In addition, my physics knowledge has not been refreshed since 1970 or so, so I cannot get more technical with it.
