There's an interesting article on the first page of the marketplace section of the WSJ on Yahoo's efforts to expand its content, including an easy to use gateway to the web. (Sorry I don't subscribe to the electronic WSJ, so I can't provide a link).

The point is made that this development could provide serious competition to AOL.

I've never understood why so many people develop a dependence on AOL when direct access to the Web is now so easy - subscribers gain very little against AOL's access and slow response problems. If Yahoo and others develop the same handholding capability as AOL, wouldn't this spell problems in a fairly near future for AOL?

AOL is down quite sharply today - I assume this article may be a reason.
