Nope you missed my point entirely.

Every so often you hear pokes at MU's Microstamp product (for example). It was first announced back in 1996 or so, and we don't really hear anything more about it. If MU was expecting that Microstamp would make zillions of dollars a few years down the line, they would devote some resources to it for R&D, marketing, etc. No loss yet. But if they decided that Microstamp wasn't a big seller, they would simply stop issuing press releases and maybe cancel the project. Still not a big loss, but certainly a missed gain.

Going a step further, there might be other products at MU that aren't as far along as Microstamp -- no press releases announcing samples to be available at some point, or whatever. But you would never hear about such a product being cancelled.
