Scott, I'm glad you mentioned Novell. Have you had a chance to look at the MOAB stuff? I think its the right approach but can Novell convince everyone to stick with them
Right now MS wants to push their server solution onto the LAN's of large companies. The previous set of LAN products was less than spectacular and they are facing very stiff competition from the embedded Novell servers as well as UNIX machines. Have you seen any trends there?

We are a beta site for Netware 5.0 so I can't talk about it too much. It is nice. Its great to be finally running a IPX-free network. :)

The problem is one of marketing, the Netware reps are constantly shifting and still don't deliver a strong message. By contrast Microsoft reps are constantly following up, giving us free software and training, invite us to free workshops at Redmond, and so on. Of course, we view it all with suspicion since things that sound too good to be true usually are. But most of the VARs and consultants I know have been swayed to the MSFT camp.

From a pure technical point, it hurts Novell that they don't have a application server, and they lack comprehensive backoffice suites. If you buy into the Microsoft vision (MTS, SQL Server, Site Server, Merchant Server, etc.) you can build a complete intranet and extranet solution in literally minutes. Of course, there are massive scaling issues, but its trivial to setup and maintain. Trying to do the same thing with Netware is an exercise in futility.

I hear Netscape is going to be releasing a full suite soon, so that will be interesting. They need a good VAR program though, last time a co-worker phoned and faxed and emailed Netscape about getting eval copies he just got a form letter back. With Microsoft, a single email got us weekly visits from the rep and eval/beta copies of everything.
