Creative's DVD-ROM.................................

Creative Labs has blown a mighty hole in Hollywood's attempts to limit the release of DVD movies. Their latest DVD-ROM player gives the opportunity to select which region you want. And it gives you five opportunities to get it wrong. That means that if you equip your PC with DVD playback capability and discover there are no titles available in Europe then the solution is simple. You simply go to one of the burgeoning DVD sites on the Internet and order your title from the States. You set your machine to Region 1 and watch the movies until a good supply of European titles are available. You then set your machine to region 2. This is not quite what Hollywood had in mind. Certainly it highlights the importance of the Internet in creating a global market for titles. It matters little where in the world you order discs from. And it's a great way of avoiding VAT. In theory you pay import duty but in practice this is a roulette game. Hollywood must be aware of this. Presumably they are banking on the fact that few people are going to watch a movie sitting in front of their PC. The big market is the DVD-Video player and this will be bought with the regional code built-in.
