Well, since you asked: John McCartney Leaves 3Com
Thursday March 19, 5:01 pm Eastern Time
Company Press Release

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1998--3Com Corporation
(NASDAQ:COMS - news) today announced that John McCartney, president of
3Com's Client Access Business Unit (CABU), has decided to leave the
company for personal reasons, effective March 20. 3Com senior vice
president, Doug Spreng, will replace McCartney as overall head of CABU.

McCartney, formerly U.S. Robotics (USR) president and chief operating
officer, joined 3Com when USR merged with 3Com in June 1997. As
president of 3Com's Client Access Business Unit, McCartney had broad
operational and strategic planning responsibilities for the company's
modem and network interface card products (NICs) and new business
initiatives. The company's client access products are sold primarily
through PC OEMs and the industry's largest worldwide retail and
distribution network into the company's four key market segments --
large enterprises, small and medium enterprises, carriers and network
service providers, and consumers. During McCartney's tenure, 3Com
maintained and extended its worldwide market leadership position in
both NICs and modems.

''It has been very satisfying to build market leadership first at USR
and now at 3Com, and to help bring two great companies together,'' said
John McCartney. ''This is a good time for me to move on, spend more time
with my family, and explore new opportunities that I hope will be
equally fulfilling.''

''John has been a driving force in integrating the two companies'
systems, strategies, products and people,'' said Eric Benhamou, 3Com's
chairman and chief executive officer. ''We appreciate his energy,
enthusiasm and strategic guidance in helping to position 3Com for the
next wave of networking and we wish him well.''
