IBM enjoyed a pretty good bump by reducing the cost per mip for their installed S390 base, basically churning the hardware base of companies who were running out of capacity but had nowhere else to go. They will have little opportunity to repeat that IMHO. take a look at their annual report - they do a skillful job of working the numbers. ibm.com

The AS400 market is vulnerable also - CPQ is taking aim, Sun also. HP has been successfully poaching AS400 for a while. My sense is that CPQ/DEC will be well positioned to grab a lot of the large AS400 base.
