But for the clock speed, a Celeron will only show modest gains over a Pentium with MMX. The basic processor core is better, so it gains slightly.

Pretty much will make it comparable to a K6, speed wise. Of course Intel won't spin it that way, they'll talk about it as an improvement to Pentium w/MMX, which is true, even if only marginally.

It WILL save them the trouble of a further shrink (to gain speed) on the existing P-MMX line.
