AT&T, WebTV alter Net access pricing

AT&T WorldNet service today said it will drop its $19.95 flat rate pricing for Internet access. The company said after May 1, subscribers will
be covered for 150 hours of Net use a month, and then be charged $0.99 each for additional hour. A spokesman for AT&T told CBS
MarketWatch 97 percent of all WorldNet Service customers, who use the service an average of 25 hours a month, will be unaffected.
However, three percent, or 36,000 subscribers, have been spending an average of 400 hours a month logged on. (That works out to about 13
hours a day.) Eliminating the "all-you-can-eat plan is the difference between a smorgasbord and a five-course meal," the spokesman said, adding
"the quality of smorgasbord can leave a lot to be desired. This is an intelligent and efficient way to use the network." He also said the company
has "pumped in multiple millions of dollars into enhancing the network this year already."

WebTV Networks Inc. announced it will boost the monthly price for WebTV Plus Network Service, effective June 1, to $24.95. (The price for
the Classic will remain at $19.95.) The company said purchasers of the Plus model are online an average of 41 hours a month. "We are
encouraged by the enthusiastic reaction to WebTV Plus, although the features that have led to such high usage are unfortunately more costly to
deliver than simple Internet access," said Steve Perlman, president of WebTV Networks. WebTV also announced free service enhancements for
WebTV Plus subscribers today including remote control programming of VCRs to record shows and multimedia e-mail.
