With the best will in the world - and I genuinely like and respect the Visi people - Visigenic were never themselves a "provider of premium enterprise development tools". They built a very good ORB that quickly became the de facto client-side implementation, and created a revenue stream from OEMs.

Nor has Borland ever been a "provider of premium enterprise development tools". Putting two companies from different backgrounds into a brand new space for both of them does not automatically qualify them in that space.

What we have here is a very clear and - in my view - necessary strategy. Check boxes have been marked (CORBA - yes; SAP connectivity - yes; AS400 - yes; etc. etc) but the strategy is not yet proven.

Nobody owns the enterprise development space yet. But believe me, Microsoft intends to, and you should not underestimate their ability to shape the requirements in their own image.
