The words in the dictionary do not carry the exact same meanings as you would think.
discern -to separate (a thing) mentally from another or others, to recognize as separate or different. 2. to perceive or recognize, make out clearly, to perceive or recognize, make out clearly, to perceive or recognize the difference.
separate- to set apart or put apart, cause to part divide, disunite, sever. to single out or set apart..... etc.

Look at the parable of the weeds. (Matt. 13:24-30) would the implication be that Jesus would ,at the harvest, separate the weeds from the wheat and separate the weeds from the wheat? Or was the implication that Jesus would be able to discern the weeds from the wheat and discern the weeds from the wheat?

I think it more right that Jesus would be able to DISCERN the weeds from the wheat and then would SEPARATE the weeds from the wheat?

Just as we should be able to discern good from evil, (Hebrews 5:14)
so should we be able to separate ourselves from it( 2Cor. 6:17)
