"Thus, Merced may not in fact be so dependent on NT and MSFT? "

Smart move by Intel. Software takes too long. Windows95 took years. NT took years. Besides Microsoft can play in many other areas than servers and still make boatloads of money, do why count on them for your critical path to success?

Gary - Re: "I was under the impression that Merced in fact is designed from the ground-up to work with HP-Unix, SCO's Unix, and other such flavors?"

Merced was designed to execute a 64 bit version of HP's PA-RISC instruction set as well as 32 bit x86 instructions.

It will, therefore, easily support HP's Unix (HP-UX).

As with any "general purpose" CPU, most operating systems can also be adapted to run on Merced.

Many others are being adapted now - Solaris (Sun), Unixware (SCO) , NT (Microsoft) and probably IRIS (SGI).
