Paul Engel, re: "Who needs AMD and Cyrx, (sic. IDT)
I don't know, but maybe:
IBM/Compaq et al, (maintaining a competitive environment).
100 MHz socket 7 chip set makers
100 MHZ socket 7 M/B makers
$599 PC makers, (which I think are on the horizon).
NC makers
Low profile/low physical volume box makers
Set-top box makers
And the performance issues of Celeron are still not clear, at least to me.
Hey, I'm not an AMD/Cyrix lover, but I am interested in their impact on Intel and the PC market. (Which seems to have been considerable over the last year).
With the '98 consensus at $3.30, and '99 way down, taking a pragmatic approach to the competition seems wise.

PAUL and EVERYONE : I wanted to get your opinion as I am considering purchasing a new computer for home use. My local Micro Center is offering a K6 233 with 32MB SDRAM, 24x CD, 56k modem 5.1gb drive-cost without monitor = $809.00 plus tax. (this is a returned model that originaly sold for $899.00, and carries the same warranty). I plan on upgrading sometime next year as the PII prices come down. Any advice?
