robert.... I previously posted that TCI didn't go with INTC for their set top box cpu's because they wanted them to come in under $10 per chip... the problem is that cell phones, set top boxes and to an extend digital camera's are loss leaders, given away to sell other services... the profit is in the content, the software, the service.... and that will imo be the trend... as it is on the web... it is the content providers that are making the $$$$ because to them it is one incremental area of exploitation. that is not to say that a killer ap. won't come along, but that the dram implosion and the silicon surplus is unlikely to be reversed by an hot consumer device in the short term.

Bob,
IMO, the next major technology will be internet bandwidth enhancement
like digital cable modems, "wireless" satellite modem dishes. The push will be for more information at a faster rate. Those of us with
phone modems (I think I speak for the majority) are frustrated with
the slowness of the internet as it is today. I would be willing to
pay $40-50 a month for cable modem or similar speed enhancement. It
will open many new industries/businesses, video on demand,
tele-video conferencing/phone calls, etc,etc. I see this techology
catching fire in mid/late '99. This will make internet service providers/cable companies lots of money if they are early into the
technology like the origional cable companies were.
