HEWLETT-PACKARD PLANS OWN VERSION OF JAVA: WSJ.
HWP MOVE SPLITS ANTI-MICROSOFT ALLIANCE: WSJ.

I haven't read the story, just the headline. But--where is the sense in developing incompatible versions of JAVA?
I know people can argue for and against anything. But the main advantage of JAVA was supposed to be its universal compatibility.

I admit my knowledge of tech and software is slight. But from personal experience, using a P133 PC, whenever I encounter JAVA applets on the internet, my PC slows down.

And if I run a JAVA program, it seems to use a heck of a lot of my PC resources, more than non-JAVA program would.

So if HWP and MSFT are developing non-standard JAVA, how much benefit does JAVA have?

I can understand why MSFT is developing a non-standard JAVA. That's reasonable (if you have an enemy, cut his throat).

So is HWP operating on the same assumption? Or is it a blend of competition plus whatever benefits there are to developing your own in-house brand?

I sold my Intel today (for a loss). Although I think Intel is a great company, I'm really scared by the changes that are happening in the PC business, and all the earnings disappointments. 1998 is shaping up to be a disaster.

BTW, I am short MU. At least that is working out.
