March 23, 1998, TechWeb News Disappearing Act: First Voodoo 2 Accelerators Fly Off Store Shelves By Kristen Kenedy As 3-D accelerator boards based on the Voodoo 2 chip set disappear from retail shelves like magic, chip manufacturer 3dfx continues to ramp up production. 3dfx president and chief executive officer Greg Ballard said that the company expects to be able meet current forecasted demand by the end of March. Ballard acknowledged some friction among board manufacturers after 3dfx sent the initial Voodoo 2 shipments to a limited number of vendors, including Creative Labs and Diamond Multimedia. But he said early investments in the chip set determined who received the chips first. "They helped finance some of the risky parts of our development," and were rewarded for that, Ballard said. STB Systems in mid-April will begin shipping to retailers a Voodoo 2-based board, a company spokesman said. He would not disclose whether the company had received the new chips or any other details. One source said that STB will also supply a leading PC OEM with the add-in boards. Creative Labs last month shipped the first board in limited quantities under the 3D Blaster Voodoo 2 brand. The product sold out quickly, and retailers continue to report out-of-stock situations. "They are not exactly selling-they are evaporating," said Greg Woock, vice president of sales at Creative Labs. Woock said Creative is shipping out additional product on a day-to-day basis. "We are trying to get anything we can get," he said. Retail stores that last week started stocking Diamond Multimedia's Monster 3-D II are also reporting speedy sell-through. A sales associate in the Portland area said her regional chain received about 10 units per store of Creative's 3D Blaster, and the product sold out within hours. Copyright (c) 1998 CMP Media Inc.
