Mark,
China is putting in fiber optic cables and telephone lines faster than any nation in the world. Their fiber optic installations, and fiber miles is just exploding, especially in the northern, and eastern regions of China. China is a divided nation, the east is industrial, and the west is very rural. The other countries with a lot of fiber miles are mainly in Europe,Belgium, and the U.K. have the infrastructure in place. The country in Europe which is almost 100% fiber to the major cities, and has spent the last 5 years installing it is Hungary.
HYBR is not a fiber optic company, but a digital transmission company. They are doing one-way telco return right now,but have made some inroads, and gotten some commitments,no profits yet.
I am not concerned about @Home,Road Runner, and did not expect anything to come of this anyway.
There are several MMDS installations that are going for internet access, another is American Telecasting out of Colorado. MMDS is inferior to LMDS,and does not have the bandwidth, and requires a high antenna. The MMDS installations I have seen are one way telco return, but fairly inexpensive, around $60/month for 400 mbps usually.
MMDS has never taken off,and most homeowner's associations fight the high antenna's(ugly)
LMDS has a similar bandwidth, and the capability of integrating with fiber very well. I believe in the end,we will see cites wired with fiber, extending their reach with LMDS to the suburbs, where the population is not concentrated.
