You mention what an advantagous deal us robotics recieved from 3com, but the combined entity has done very little since. Both seem to be leading players in increasingly commodity plays(NIC's and modems).
Compaq is the biggest player is the biggest commodity out there, PC's.
Even the server space, once a high margin business is becoming very tight with everybody and their brother hopping on board.

I'm sure Compaq is hoping the Digital acquisition will catapult them from the crowded pc and server space into the enterprise which has been IBM's bread and butter. However looking at IBM's hardware numbers doesn't indicate their's alot of room for growth, maybe services is the key going forward, it bails Oracle out every quarter.

You mention us robotics wasn't forthcoming about channel stuffing and made coms eat it late in 97. I hope Digital is more honest in their disclosure. What worries me about them is their high exposure to Asia, any sort of earnings miss will push Compaq stock down even further.
