I was a lurker here at that time and I think that was a pretty accurate analysis. CPQ needs to change the way they make products and how those products get configured before they can make a BTO program work, there is no magic that will transfer the efficiency of a big forecast driven mfg operation to the channel (just the opposite) and likewise no magic that will eliminate the need for the channel to make a buck. I suspect that CPQ is working to a different solution which eliminates costs in other parts of the supply chain to get to a competitive endpoint against Dell, rather than just try to copy the model. Clearly the first few attempts have not gone too well but they are pretty smart guys. And if that doesn't work, they are also moving out of that battleground to fight with slower opponents (like IBM and HP). Dell may just be too tough to beat in the PC space. If CPQ has come to that conclusion they may just retrench around a higher end strategy where more infrastructure wins and Dell does not have the same advantage.
