Disney does internet Multicasting because of improvements in MPEG encoders.......................................

But that doesn't mean that companies-both big and small-won't experiment with the idea. In fact, a few forward-thinking startups (including industry goliath Disney) are working on just that.

Disney [DIS] announced last month that it was working with Precept Software on an IP Multicast client for PCs, with a goal of delivering on-demand movies via the Internet. It marks the first move by a major broadcaster/studio to deliver video over the Net. Disney plans to begin beta testing the multicast service in March or April to educational facilities. The decision was prompted by improvements in MPEG compression and the recent emergence of multicast technology. The company is using the MBONE service.
