Simple Explanations for Complicated Sciences:

Most people readily recognize cardiovascular surgery or "coronary artery bypass surgery", as the surgery that occurs when there are blood vessels in the heart that are partially or completely blocked, and need to be bypassed. Peripheral vascular surgery involves all the vessels in the body, not just the heart, and vascular surgeons perform procedures on these vessels, which are damaged by atherosclerosis. This damage usually produces narrowing or blockage of the blood vessel. This narrowing does not allow arterial blood , which is carrying oxygen, to the tissues. Oxygen is the nutrient that all tissues in the body require for growth and strength. Not receiving blood carrying oxygen causes the tissue which is lacking the oxygen to wither, become painful, not heal ulcers or, and eventually to die and develop gangrene. The analogy to the heart is a heart attack. When a patient has a heart attack, there is severe pain because the heart muscle does not get enough blood flow. It usually happens when the heart muscle needs extra blood flow; this could be after a heavy
meal, or after exercise. These entities require a sudden but increase in blood flow, so there is chest pain due to a lack of oxygen in the heart muscle. If enough of the heart muscle dies, than so does the patient.
Peripheral vascular surgery also deals with tissue death. Manifestations of peripheral vascular disease are ulcers on the foot that do not heal, gangrene that develops in the foot or pain in the foot at rest.Similar to heart attacks pain can occur with walking, because the calf muscle is being exercised and needs a temporary increase in blood flow.
These damaged blood vessels can occur in the aorta, which is the main blood vessel in the abdomen and in the arteries of the legs. As the body divides into two at the leg, the aorta also separates into two, usually at the navel. The most common area of blockage is in the thigh in the femoral artery. Because of these blockages, bypasses must be
performed; bypasses do just what they describe, they bypass the blocked vessel and bring "good" or oxygenated blood to the area of concern. This "oxygenated" blood" is routed to the organ via a tube, which is the called the graft.
Peripheral vascular surgeons perform surgery on the neck when the carotid artery is blocked by cleaning out the plaque, on the aorta in the abdomen, when it is blocked or has aneurysms and on the leg when there is evidence a blockage is causing pain with walking, preventing an ulcer from healing and has caused gangrene. Interestingly, there
are times when there are blockages that do not cause symptoms.
Risk factors responsible for the development of peripheral vascular disease are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cigarette smoking, elevated cholesterol and coronary artery disease .
Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease include pain with walking also known as claudication; pain in the foot at night which awakens the patient from sleep which is known as rest pain; and gangrene, which is a blackening of part of the extremity. Disease in the primary neck vessel, the carotid artery is manifest as small or mini strokes, a full stroke or as transient symptoms which indicate the eventual occurrenceof a stroke. Vascular surgery of the carotid artery cleans out the palcque and is known as a carotid endarterectomy.
Aneurysms, a swelling of a blood vessel, are also a manifestation of vascular disease. Aneurysms can occur on the brain, and neurosurgeons treat them. Aneurysms in other areas of the body are treated by vascular surgeons. It is important to remember that when aneurysms occur, they should be evaluated so they do not rupture and cause severe bleeding or death.
In addition to bypassing blood vessels, cleaning out placque
and repairing aneurysms, vascular surgeons can also insert balloon catheters into narrowed blood vessels and inflate the balloon to widen the blood vessel. This is known as angioplasty . This procedure is commonly performed on coronary and peripheral vessels. Being referred to a vascular surgeon does not always mean that an operation is
necessary.
Vascular surgery is often thought of as "vein surgery." This is the most infrequently performed type of procedure done by vascular surgeons. This kind of surgery is for varicose veins, which are symptomatic and have not responded to more conservative therapy. This conservative therapy is usually a surgical support stocking, leg elevation at the end of the day and leg exercises.
People exhibiting symptoms of vascular disease are usually
referred to a vascular surgeon by other physicians.

BTW: The stock has displayed good characteristics and it does not seem out of the ordinary to fall back a bit after a nice run up like this. It gives excellent opportunities for people who were concerned while buying in to last weeks rally. Like i had suspected profit taking hit the stock at the .6 level. This time i predict we see a run up to .75 within a months at least. It will be very unpredictable to determine what kind of behaviour the stock will have till a $1 mark is made and that will make all the difference. We will get there but it takes time. The stock is an awesome buy under .55 for the next run up. Great post Jeff ..I think thats the best i have seen coming from you ever even though your posts are always packed with information. Welcome to ABMI Mark and RUSSN.
