Regarding Lucent and Nortel. I thought Lucent, Ciena, Nortel are working on optical networking components such WDM, optical cross connects, add-drop multiplexers etc. These are also necessary to increase bandwidth for the coming data wave. If so, would not these companies be just as relevant to the coming data wave as Cisco?

Yes, but for different reasons. Cisco doesn't deliver bandwidth per se, they deliver the ability to move packets and cells. WDM is layer 1 technology. Cisco plays with products above the transport layer.

FWIW, my view is that Cisco will try to get to some of these technologies through partnerships or acquisitions. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Yes, I've heard similar comments before, but it's my opinion that these low layer technologies are of little interest to a company like Cisco. Just one man's opinion.
