My guess is we don't have to worry about the new invention. By mid-1999 when they start shipping OROM, DVD will have grown up and the momentum will be ours to lose. Further I think the ioptics gadget will initially be targeted towards those specific markets that they mentioned - embedded gadgets and portable. Further it looks like it is not intented to replace huge amounts of storage - say the 17000 Megs of information that a 2-sided DVD disk can hold. Finally they say OROM will be 1-2 cents per Meg; DVD is roughly 10-20 times cheaper than this. And this last point is what moves markets. And this last point is why we do not have to concern ourselves about OROM as being competition!

(But I do love the gadget! It will be a huge success.)
