Messy Execution Clouds DVD Picture

The time has arrived for DVD-ROM to shine at retail and the PC side of the convergence equation is nothing but a mess. When CompUSA starts selling and advertising DVD video players again, like they did two weeks ago, you know something's not working.

MediaPlay and Best Buy have both already laid claim to having sold their millionth DVD video, while software publishers have pushed out only three or four titles that found their way onto PC Data's software sales reports.

Xiphias and Hi-Val say they have placed their DVD-ROM/Video display racks at CompUSA and Computer City, but regular visits to the stores reveal the racks frequently aren't in place or are empty of merchandise.

Philips and Hi-Val have virtually given up on the category in despair, burdened with too much first-generation product in retail warehouses to bring a second-generation product to market. Creative Labs has just about taken over the upgrade kit side of the market by default, with the only second-generation product in stores and, more recently, a $149 drive-only solution. I think I'll be sitting this one out.
