Re: "you only lose when you sell for less than what you paid" as being in your mind...I agree with you. When I opened my account I put 20% of my money into it, and mentally I kissed it goodbye, and told myself that I won't cash in for ten to fifteen years. I fully intend to walk away with much more than what I started with, but that's too far into the future to be overly concerned with. I have stocks in good companies and that's all that's important to me. Right now it's just monopoly money. I have a total of 10 stocks, the CPQ purchase making me fully invested. I don't expect to sell them until I cash out for good. Not that you'd care to try, but you'd have a hell of a time trying to convince me that these fluctuations today are either making or losing me money. When I'm close to cashing out I'll be more inclined to think about my holdings as representing real money, though.
