This HP Java story is nonsense. Sun has always advanced the notion that you can build your own Java technology from scratch provided you're following the specifications. HP has the resources to do it and they're doing it. They will compete above the standard but they must track the ISO standards if they want to leverage existing and future applications, components and services. This is good news for Java except for the not-so-unseen hand of Microsoft in there. HP is simply the Sun wannabee of the century:

HP revenues and earnings: 500 million, 100 million
Sun revenues and earnings: 9,000 million, 800 million

Sun: 18X HP's revenues and 8X HP's earnings. HP no like Sun.
