Right, should have said 'potential Tandem acquisition'. There were a flurry of 'leaks' about merger talks throughout 96, in C-S news and elsewhere. Rumors in late 96 inside both companies and in the 'trade rag' press was that merger negotiations had been started in early 96 but had fallen apart. As I recall, the assumption was that the departure of Jimmy Trebig (Tandem founder and CEO) and the Tandem/MSFT agreement in summer 96 was the prelude to CPQ going back to the table. If I had been a little more of a risk taker I would have bought Tandem on speculation... but I'm really not much of a risk taker.
BTW C-S news had most of the inside dope on the DEC merger discussions as well, I think they have some good sources in the upper end of a lot of the Tech companies.
