You know, it has taken a decade, an unlimited budget and a monopoly operating system to get Microsoft's distributed component technology to where it is today: on the verge of failure. Windows is really just a glorified Palm Pilot operating system and the scaled up and scaled down versions (NT and CE respectively) aren't much better. The fact is, PC hardware has been more of a success than PC software for general, stand-alone computing tasks. One of those adaptations was the creation of a the first generation of information appliances now powered by Microsoft Office. It's all bailing gum and chewing wire and it's about to come to a crashing end. Microsoft is under seige from Java-based computing solutions and that's clearly going to accelerate. Apple has it right: make Java the foundation and that MUST include Java-based components, to wit, Java Beans.
