CPM lost the war after IBM made DOS the defacto standard. CPM hung on for a few years, and Z-80 has a long life inside things. The initial war was between the Apples and CPM, then between DOS and Apple, with DOS overtaking and vanquishing Apple, fortuneately Apple had $$ from the good years to hang in there, and now has a nice small niche to live in.

I predict it will live happily in the nich grow a bit but lose share and expand share only after some clone scenario evolves that allows clones to prosper and not kill Apple further.

I am looking in my crystal ball and I see Apple gaining market share vis a vis Wintel. I see Microsoft having problems and people realizing Windows is not as good as Apple's. Numbers?, Numbers? I like 24.3%. When?, when? August 23, 1999!!
If Apple gets a top rate CEO and marketing genius, then what I have seen in my crystal ball may not be that far fetched. I hope I will remember what I write here when August 23, 1999 comes around. I hope it's not a weekend.
